PICK OF TODAY’S RADIO
AUNTIE’S WAR, 2PM, RADIO 4 EXTRA
ALL this week, the writer and broadcaster Edward Stourton brings us archive recordings of Churchill, Charles de Gaulle and Dame Vera Lynn, along with Richard Dimbleby, the American correspondent Ed Murrow and other broadcasters who told the truth, yet kept hopes alive, during the dark days of the Second World War. Stourton uses these clips to show how the BBC earned a reputation for reliable reporting during the war. The atmosphere of these recordings is so powerful you can almost see Churchill, Murrow and others at their microphones, as sirens sounded and the bombs fell.
■ DERMOT KENNEDY has written some cracking songs, including Power Over Me and Better Days, a song that has dried many a tear and lifted many a heart. The Irish singersongwriter (pictured), who’s been on a round-the-world busking tour to raise money for charity, will be joining KEN BRUCE (RADIO 2, 9.30AM) each morning this week to pick his Tracks Of My Years. He starts with songs from Garth Brooks and Vanessa Williams.
