Scoot about confidently with five hot safety tips
ROAD Safety Week starts next Monday, bringing tips for staying safe. So what’s the best way to drive well on your mobility scooter?
■ FIRSTLY, look for a supplier who will offer you an in-store or home test on a scooter to ensure you are fit for the road — able to accelerate, brake, turn in a circle and carry out other manoeuvres.
■ YOU’LL need the right scooter for your height, weight and planned usage, so again you’ll benefit from a personalised consultation to ensure you’re buying the right type. At the same time, you should be receiving training on safety and the rules of the road.
■ INSURANCE is highly recommended. And it’s important to wear safety equipment such as a helmet or padding if you are intending to go on the road.
■ MOBILITY scooters are supposed to be an alternative to walking. So follow the speed limit at all times — 4mph in a pedestrian area and up to 8mph on the road, where a larger class 3 mobility scooter will be required.
■ KEEP your scooter serviced. And before setting out, ensure it’s fully charged and that the lights and horn are working. Check the tyres — though most are solid rubber, so puncture-proof.
Mobility scooters can help you to do daily tasks, follow interests and stay mobile and independent.
Take safety steps from the start — and scoot with confidence.
