Trump: Tuesday will be an exciting day for a lot of people...
Clearest hint yet that he’s getting ready to go for Presidency again
DONALD Trump dropped his biggest hint yet that he will run for the White House again as he cast his vote in the US mid- term elections yesterday.
Mr Trump, who many see as the front runner to be Republican Party candidate for the 2024 presidency, has been at the centre of speculation for several weeks.
At a polling station in Palm Beach, Florida, he told reporters: ‘I think Tuesday [next week] will be a very exciting day for a lot of people.’
His comments came as Americans headed to the polls in the mid-terms, including the Duchess of Sussex who wore an ‘I voted’ sticker on her jumper in a picture posted on Twitter.
Republicans were on course to win back control of the House of Representatives, with voters
‘Result could take days or months’
punishing Democrats for skyhigh inflation. The Republican Party was predicted to win at least 15 House seats and had a good chance of taking the Senate, which would give them full control of Congress.
But before polls even opened a bitter legal battle started in key swing states over which votes could be counted.
It could be weeks until the final Senate result is clear, raising fears that protesters could take to the streets and resultdenying candidates could prematurely declare victory.
Democrats warned of a ‘Red Mirage’ as happened in the 2020 election when early voting leaned Republican but mail-in ballots, which are counted later, favoured Democrats.
Polls show that the economy is voters’ main concern, followed by abortion after the Supreme Court overturned the law guaranteeing women a right to the procedure in June.
During his final pitch to voters in Ohio on Monday, Mr Trump promised a ‘very big announcement’ on November 15 at his estate in Florida, MaraLago, which is widely expected to be his candidacy for the presidency in 2024.
The first polls closed at 11pm UK time last night and the last will close at 6am today.
Analysts will be watching House races in Michigan to get an early sense of whether the Democrats are defying the polls. Democrats are especially watching their candidate Abigail Spanberger in Virginia, a former CIA case officer who condemned her party’s Left wing and has a constituency that was redrawn in her favour – yet still faces a tough re-election fight. If she loses, the Republicans could be on for a gain of 20 seats, according to election watchers. Republican control of even one chamber of Congress would leave Mr Biden vulnerable to investigations into his family and administration while having to defend his policy accomplishments, including a sweeping infrastructure measure.
An emboldened Republican Party could also make it harder to raise the debt ceiling and add restrictions to additional support for Ukraine.
Adding to the tension is the fact the full result could take months if the Georgia senate race goes to a second round of voting, which is likely.
