THE Countess of Lucan lay sedated in hospital last night as detectives tried to trace her husband after the savage murder of her children’s nanny. Police say they want to find the 39-year-old Earl, who has not appeared at his usual haunts among the gambling clubs of Mayfair.

DAME Marina Warner, 76. The London-born historian and novelist, who was shortliste­d for the Booker Prize, has been described as ‘one of Britain’s most lauded public intellectu­als’. The daughter of a bookseller, she started out as a journalist for Vogue before writing almost 40 books, many analysing myths and legends. LOU FERRIgnO, 71. The U.S actor and former bodybuilde­r, a two-time Mr Universe by the age of 22, played the title role in 1970s TV series The Incredible Hulk (pictured). Ferrigno, who lost most of his hearing as a toddler due to ear infections, read the comic book as a child to give himself comfort after bullies made fun of his hearing aid.

DOROTHy DAnDRIDgE (1922-1965). The U.S. actress and singer was the first black woman nominated for the Best Actress Oscar (for Carmen Jones) and the first to appear on the cover of Life magazine. During World War II, she sang at the London Palladium, and while ‘ coolly’ drinking tea like the locals, she said: ‘It was in the shelters that I developed an affinity with the English.’

SIR gILES gILBERT SCOTT (1880-1960). The London- born architect designed Battersea Power Station, Liverpool Cathedral and the iconic red K2 telephone box, which featured in a 2002 set of stamps honouring British design.
