DOON MACKICHAN, who played the vile Cathy, has left the Scottish sitcom, and Colin (Jonathan Watson) must now adjust to the single life. Losing a main character can either be a shot in the arm or the death knell for a show, but there’s definitely potential here for the former, as Colin gets a chance to emerge from under his drunken wife’s shadow. In this first episode of series six, he is struggling — with dressing, showering and leaving the house — but he does accept an invitation to pop round for a cuppa with Beth and Eric (Arabella Weir and Alex Norton), and it’s not long before more neighbours drop by. The concern for Colin is touching, though whether he’s ready to cook anything other than a fried egg for himself is debatable, and not all the words of advice, especially from Christine (Elaine C. Smith, pictured far right with, clockwise, Weir, Norton, Jamie Quinn, Kieran Hodgson, Graeme Stevely, Joy McAvoy and Watson) have the desired effect of lifting his spirits. It will be interesting to see how things develop for Colin, as well as for eternal host Beth, without Cathy sinking her drinks and being such a disruptive presence — and with Cathy gone, we’re treated to a highlight of this thi episode, i d as there’s th ’ a chance h for f everyone to say what they really think of her. As Colin so rightly admits: ‘she could be a bit much sometimes.’ The boxset of this new series joins series one to five on iPlayer tonight.
