MPs’ 3,000 toxic tweets a day
MPS are being bombarded with over 3,000 abusive tweets a day, a BBC probe has claimed.
Analysis of three million tweets aimed at politicians over a six week- period found one in 20 could be classed as ‘toxic’.
Female MPs are bearing the brunt, with social media users more likely to call them ‘thick’ and ‘ignorant’ than their male counterparts.
Labour MP Jess Phillips, pictured, said colleagues were becoming too afraid to speak their mind on certain topics – and had even voted against their principles on some occasions to avoid backlash.
The study found 130,000 that were offensive. Of these, 20,000 were considered severely toxic. Former prime minister Boris Johnson received the highest number of toxic tweets at 19,000. Rishi Sunak and Nadine Dorries were second with around 9,000 each.
