A special poignancy

-

ALWAYS the most poignant of occasions, the Service of remembrance in Whitehall was all the more affecting this year, coming so soon after the death of Queen elizabeth.

The lines of sorrow and loss were plain to see on the face of her eldest son, now King Charles III, as he laid the first wreath at the Cenotaph yesterday.

as well as being his mother, the Queen was also a potent symbol of this country’s greatest generation, who stood firm against Nazi tyranny and prevailed.

She cannot be replaced but her unique example of wisdom and selfless public service lives on. The new king could have had no better teacher.
