Italia ’90: When Football Changed Forever/1966: Who Stole The World Cup?, 9pm/10pm, Ch4

IN THE first of a double bill of World Cup programmes on Channel 4, England have reached the knockout stage in 1990, which means that they will now be playing on the mainland. While there were still skirmishes between supporters, locals and the police, the play on the pitch inspired new respect for the Three Lions, who didn’t win the Cup but walked off with the Fair Play award. At 10pm, Who Stole The World Cup? tells an extraordinary story that plays out like a classic crime caper. The Queen presenting the Jules Rimet Trophy to Bobby Moore (pictured) is one of the most enduring images from the 1966 World Cup, but the England captain very nearly didn’t get his hands on this precious item, after it was stolen from its display case in Westminster Central Hall less than four months before the tournament began. Now, the names of the thieves are finally revealed.
