BRUNO BLASTS QATAR

World Cup party ruined for everyone, claims United star

- CHRIS WHEELER at Craven Cottage

BRUNO FERNANDES last night became the highest profile Premier League player to hit out at the Qatar World Cup.

The Manchester United and Portugal star claimed that the timing and venue ignore the wishes of players and fans, and raised concerns over human-rights issues hanging over the tournament which kicks off on Sunday.

‘Of course it’s strange,’ said Fernandes. ‘It’s not exactly the time we want to be playing in the World Cup. For fans and players, kids will be in school and people will be working.

‘We know what has been said about the people who have died building the stadiums. We are not happy about that at all. These kind of things should not happen at any time, but a World Cup — which is a party for fans, players and something that is a joy — should be done in a better way.’

Fernandes’ team-mate and Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen added: ‘I totally agree with Bruno. I think everyone agrees it hasn’t been done in the right way.’
