Bark from the grave, spaniel given garden funeral

- By Andrew Levy

WHEN spaniel Maisie ran off spooked by a firework and then a crushed animal was found by a road, it seemed a lost cause.

Her owners even had an emotional burial in their garden, with the body wrapped in Maisie’s favourite blanket.

But then – five days after vanishing – a dog matching her description was caught and Maisie was on her way home for a tearful reunion with Codie Hutton and family. She now thinks they may have buried a fox in a case of mistaken identity.

Miss Hutton, 26, an NHS worker, said markings on the tail and legs had convinced them it was Maisie, to the upset of her son Taylen, three.

Their pet bolted when Miss Hutton stopped the car to let her answer a call of nature early on Bonfire Night. ‘I thought I was never going to see her again,’ said Miss Hutton, of Crowfield, Suffolk.

She turned to local group FIDO, who mounted a search with volunteers and a drone. Sightings came in suggesting Maisie had travelled 17 miles before she was finally found in Wickham Market.

Miss Hutton said she is ‘happy, healthy and back to her cheeky self’.
