Bezos: I’ll give away most of my £105billion
IF handed vast amounts of money to give away, most of us would regard the task as one of the easier problems life has thrown at us.
But not if you are Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The world’s fourth-richest person said he was finding philanthropy ‘very hard’ after vowing to give most of his £105billion fortune to groups fighting climate change.
Mr Bezos, 58, did not name the groups – or how much they would get – saying: ‘We are building the capacity to being able to give away this money. It’s not easy.’
In contrast, his ex-wife MacKenzie Scott, 52, donated nearly £3.5billion to 465 groups in less than a year.
Mr Bezos revealed the giveaway pledge with girlfriend Lauren Sanchez, 52, in a TV interview.
He has been criticised for not signing the Giving Pledge – a promise by hundreds of the world’s richest people to donate most of their wealth to charity.
Last Friday he handed singer and philanthropist Dolly Parton $100million (£85million) for good causes.
Meanwhile, Amazon is said to be about to lay off up to 10,000 staff.
