AUTUMN DAYS

It’s rained a lot these last

few weeks

Today we’ve seen the sun, I’m working in my

garden now

The clear-up has begun! The compost heap

needs turning

To enfold the fallen leaves, It’s hot here in the

midday heat

Despite a gentle breeze. I found a tiny field

mouse nest

Tucked in among the shrubs, It’s empty now except

for grass

And old nut shells

and grubs.

I’ve left it where I found

it, as

I hope they’ll reappear. It’s good to think they’ll

make a home

Feel safe and happy here. The pots are emptied of

their earth

For rain to wash them clean, The flowers have

been wonderful

The best they’ve ever been. I’ve tidied up the

potting shed,

Hung up my tools

and gloves.

This garden gives

such happiness

There is so much to love. I’ve cut back shrubs and

swept the leaves

And acorns by the ton, The squirrels will eat well

this year

Despite what storms

will come.

I love the autumn

colour change

From green to browns

and reds

It’s nearly winter, time

to put

The garden to its bed. Lindsay Hartgroves, Launceston, Cornwall.
