BRITAIN’S oldest miner, 81- year- old William Henry Stevenson, of Wednesbury, Staffordsh­ire, has been sacked. The National Coal Board had to do it because ‘Old Bill’ refused to stop working. Doctors had warned him his heart might let him down.

SCOTlAND Yard chiefs are to review security surroundin­g the Royal Family amid growing concern about the ‘persecutio­n’ of the Princess of Wales. Buckingham Palace is increasing­ly alarmed at the activities of photograph­ers with motorbikes and twoway radios who are accused of making the Princess’s life a misery.

ClU GUlAGER (1928-2022). The actor from Oklahoma played the only character Ronald Reagan killed in his film career, in 1964’s The killers. Gulager also starred in Western series The Virginian, which was shown on BBC1 in the 1960s and 1970s. Born William, his nickname came from martins nesting at the family home when he was born (he was part-Cherokee and their word for the birds is clu-clu). EllEN AlBERTINI DOW (1913-2015). The U.S. actress studied mime in Paris with Marcel Marceau but only stepped into the limelight in her 70s after retiring as a drama teacher. Dow played a nun in two Sister Act films and performed Rapper’s Delight in 1998’s The Wedding Singer. Years after the movie, she said: ‘I still sing it all the time.’

IN 1966, Cathy Come Home, directed by ken loach, was shown on BBC1. It exposed Britain’s severe housing shortage and was voted best drama in a British Film Institute poll in 2000.

IN 2008, On The Buses star Reg Varney — who played Stan Butler in the TV series — died, aged 92.
