DIY SOS: THE BIG BUILD FOR CHILDREN IN NEED, 9PM, BBC1

-

AS PART of the build-up to the live Children In Need telethon on Friday, Nick Knowles and the team take on an especially mammoth Big Build in Leeds. In fact, it’s such a huge project that they cannot do it alone. Along with the usual army of volunteers, the DIY SOS crowd team up with Radio 2 presenters Scott Mills (pictured with Nick), Sara Cox, Rylan, Trevor Nelson and DJ Spoony, who collectively roll-up their sleeves to lend a hand. The project will transform an empty lot into a new HQ for Leeds-based charity Getaway Girls. The charity started life in the kitchen of a terraced house and now helps some 800 girls and young women in desperate need of protection and support. While Nick stays on site to oversee bricks and mortar, Sara and Zoe learn more about the Getaway Girls themselves, hearing heartbreaking but also inspiring stories from those who have had their lives changed by their involvement with the charity. This is everything that DIY SOS and Children In Need do so well — bringing people together to create, as Knowles puts it, ‘a giant ball of goodness’.
