Glorious gas lamps

AS A Londoner born and bred, I was horrified to learn from griff Rhys Jones’s article (Mail) that a bunch of gasbags at Westminster council are planning to destroy the city’s wonderful Victorian gas mantles and replace their gentle glow with blinding LED lights.

In my youth it gave me some pleasure and pride to watch tourists, particularly Americans, admiring these wonderful street lamps and taking pictures of them.

Some jobsworths take an almost satanic pleasure in destroying the historical and beautiful in favour of anything new and ugly.
