THoUSANdS of people lost their lives building stadiums and associated structural projects connected with the football World Cup finals that start in Qatar next week.

Contrast that with zero deaths in building all stadiums for the London 2012 olympics.

This was thanks to often-criticised health and safety legislation. Based on deaths before the Health and Safety At Work Act of 1974, the lives of about a thousand workers are saved each year — that’s nearly 50,000 lives.
