Walker out of opener against Iran

- SAMI MOKBEL Chief Football Reporter in Doha

KYLE WALKER is expected to miss England’s World Cup opener against Iran on Monday but there is growing hope that the defender will be available to face the USA four days later. The Manchester City defender had been a major doubt for the tournament after groin surgery last month, and his place against Iran is likely to go to Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier. However, Walker could be fit to return — probably off the bench — against the USA. Speaking to ITV Sport, Walker paid tribute to the Manchester City and England physios for aiding his recovery, saying: ‘To represent your country at any time is a great achievement, but this one is special due to the circumstances leading up to it. ‘I had an operation and it was touch-and-go, but full credit to the physios for getting me back fit and healthy. I was never worried. I always have belief in myself.’
