PREDICTIONS Clean sweep for an England win!
WHATEVER system Gareth Southgate goes with — whether a back three or a back four — the Three Lions should have more than enough to beat Iran.
I’m predicting a narrow win to open this World Cup.
IT COULD be a tricky opener for England but I’m predicting a winning one nonetheless — just like the start of the 2018 World Cup when Harry Kane’s late second goal of the game secured a 2-1 victory over Tunisia.
I DON’T expect England to get off to a flying start. If they are to do well this tournament, I think it will be one they grow into — but I do expect them to win this game. A methodical victory with a goal from a setpiece and a penalty. IT WON’T be a simple game, by virtue of Iran’s expected defensive approach. They will look to nullify and frustrate but England’s players have been noticeably positive in recent days — they will pass this first assignment.
I EXPECT it to be cagey. Iran will be full of energy and won’t need motivation. We need to use the ball intelligently, with a quick tempo to move Iran around and hopefully that will allow Harry Kane to exploit any gaps.
EXPECTING an edgy, less-than-classic England performance with so much at stake. Iran defended stoutly when beating Uruguay 1-0 in a World Cup warm-up in Austria last month. Class will prevail and the breakthrough will come.
ANYONE who thinks England will romp home comfortably on Monday are in for a surprise.
Iran will be organised and hyped up for this game. England will win this opener — but it won’t be easy.
