A pasty nasty for Greggs

-

PASTY wars have erupted in Cornwall after Greggs announced it was opening a bakery there.

The chain announced its Truro branch will open on December 6. It has long faced a battle to establish a foothold in the ‘home of the pasty’, and has even been forced to abandon previous efforts over local opposition.

Greggs tried to open its first Cornish store in 2019 in Saltash, but it closed after just nine months following a lack of trade. It has since opened two more, one tucked away on an industrial estate near Launceston and one at an A30 service station.

Locals said they never believed the popular bakery would try to open a branch in the ‘heart of the county’. One Cornish pasty fan said online: ‘This is the first major battle in a full-on war. It is an invasion on our capital.’

A Greggs spokesman confirmed the opening of the controversial new branch.
