Welsh wonders! Dragons fight back against USA

-

WALES fought back to clinch a draw in their opening match last night – and the Dragons’ fans cheered them to the rafters.

About 2,000 supporters turned a corner of the stadium into a vociferous sea of red as they savoured every moment of their team’s historic appearance at a World Cup – the first for 64 years.

Their efforts against USA went badly in the first half. The team conceded a stunning goal and captain Gareth Bale was slapped with a yellow card for a foul. But the second half culminated in a penalty equaliser, which Bale calmly smashed into the net.

Ken Tucker, 87, who travelled from Merthyr Tydfil to the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan with his family, said: ‘I remember the 1958 tournament very well. I never thought I’d see Wales back in the World Cup.’

Last night’s draw keeps Wales in contention, with fans hoping the team can repeat their Euro 2016 heroics, when they made it to the semi-finals.
