PC ‘caused two deaths in high-speed joyrider chase’

A POLICEMAN has been accused of causing the deaths of a child actor and his aunt as he chased a joyrider.

PC Edward Welch, 34, chased Joshua Dobby at speeds of 60mph in 20mph zones in Penge, south-east London, in August 2016, the Old Bailey heard yesterday.

Dobby lost control of the stolen Ford Focus and hit Rozanne Cooper, 34, and her nephew Makayah McDermott, ten, who had secured a role in a major TV series.

Dobby was convicted of two counts of manslaught­er and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. PC Welch is charged with two counts of death by dangerous driving, one of causing serious injury and of dangerous driving.

The prosecutio­n said there was no indication the Ford Focus was being driven dangerousl­y before the PC gave chase. The trial continues.
