Daring to follow spaceman Dan’s lead
SOME adventures of Colonel Dan Dare, of the Interplanet Space Fleet, can be heard on BBC Radio 4 Extra, which is great news for fans of the character from Eagle comic, in which he appeared from 1950 to 1967. Reading Dan Dare, created by Frank Hampson, was a weekly highlight for thousands of children. He was largely responsible for our interest in space travel and the possibility of meeting other life forms.
Back then, the closest thing to a British spacecraft was the supersonic Anglo-French airliner Concorde. But with the launch of Nasa’s Artemis 1 rocket last week, in which Britain has a role through its membership of the European Space Agency, it is clear that the era of space exploration is thriving. Dan Dare would approve.
