Jenas: Keeper staying on was a joke
JERMAINE JENAS slammed the Iranian medical staff for allowing goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to continue after a brutal clash of heads with team-mate Majid Hosseini. The two Iranians smashed into each other in the eighth minute and caused an 11-minute delay, with the goalkeeper originally allowed to continue before going down again and deciding to come off. Jenas, on commentary for the game on BBC, criticised the medical staff for allowing the goalkeeper to continue. He said: ‘It’s out of order, it’s the responsibility of the medical team to make the right decision and get him off. He shouldn’t even be on the pitch now. I think it’s a joke.
‘His last involvement was to save his team a goal so you can see why Carlos Queiroz would be disappointed but it was the right call.
‘And it was the right call 10 minutes ago.’
Sportsmail columnist Chris Sutton tweeted: ‘Football’s concussion procedures are an embarrassment. I’ll say it again: the football authorities do not care about their players.’
