BRIDGE MASTERCLASS

- PETER DONOVAN

You are playing in 6 ♠ . You have to lead and make the rest of the tricks. Plan the play. Assuming that you have played yesterday's deal in the normal fashion, you will have reached the above position after eight tricks, having three hearts in hand and a club in dummy.

When you play your last club to ruff in dummy, West will start to be squeezed. if he discards a diamond, your suit is established for three tricks; if he discards a heart, you ruff a heart with your last trump and the knave becomes good. so a doomed contract has suddenly come home; this is why it is so important to understand squeezeplay.
