She loved watching the detectives
THE Queen was a surprisingly keen watcher of television: among her favourite shows over the years were Pointless, The Kumars at No 42, The Bill and, of course, that age-old favourite Morecambe and Wise.
After her husband Philip’s death Line of Duty kept her hooked. Her Master of the Household, Sir Tony Johnstone-Burt, said: ‘My principal duty with HM has been to keep her spirits up – so I’ve been watching Line of Duty with her – I’m “the Explainer”! It’s very funny.’
He says that the elderly monarch would laugh as she struggled to understand the convoluted plots and sometimes incomprehensible dialogue of the gritty BBC police drama.
The Queen told biographer Gyles Brandreth: ‘It keeps me in touch – when I can understand what’s being said.
‘There’s an awful lot of mumbling on television now. It’s not my hearing.’
