LAST summer, we learned that Kate Harris, nee Hakewill, 73, is writing a book about her work at the Barnardo’s children’s home at Morley Manor in Derbyshire. She told us: ‘I hope to trace former colleagues there from 1966

69. When I arrived, I was only

17. Morley was then a training children’s home; there were newborns and children up to age seven — we loved them all. Later, the Barnardo’s policy changed, with the emphasis on small family units, and children were fostered and adopted.

‘I’d love to reconnect with anyone who worked with me there — especially Rachel Flatt, Jean Mellor and Heather Reeve — and reminisce.’ We’ve as yet been unable to reconnect Kate with Jean and Heather; Rachel’s daughter Jane informed Kate that sadly Rachel died recently. Jane told Kate much about her mum’s fascinating life, including her work as a missionary in Morocco.
