Agony of girlfriend over footballer knifed to death at nightclub

- By Andy Dolan

THE girlfriend of a man stabbed to death in a nightclub on Boxing Day has paid tribute to him in an emotional social media post – as police were last night questioning two men over the murder.

Semi-professional footballer Cody Fisher collapsed at the Crane nightclub in Birmingham after revellers saw a group ‘chasing’ a man.

The 23-year-old, who played for Stratford Town FC in Warwickshire, was stabbed and died at the scene.

West Midlands Police said two men had been arrested on suspicion of murder. A 22-year-old was held at an address in the city centre and a 21-year-old was detained in London. Yesterday, Mr Fisher’s girlfriend, Jess Chatwin, shared heartbreaking tributes online saying: ‘You didn’t deserve any of this. I’m so sorry this has

happened to you my baby please come home. I love you forever Cody Fisher...’

On Instagram, she posted a picture of the pair out for drinks with the caption: ‘My baby’s smile. How can you take him away? It was meant to be us forever. I’m sorry my baby you didn’t deserve this. I promise to do everything to get you the justice you deserve.’

A relative at the Fisher home in Studley, near Stratford-upon-Avon, said:

‘As you can imagine, it’s a very difficult time for the family.

‘We’re devastated and trying to make sense of it.

‘Cody was a wonderful boy and the family had had a wonderful Christmas. All of this is really heart breaking.’

It came as clubbers appeared to have filmed the final moments of Cody Fisher’s life as he received medical attention on the dancefloor of the club, a ‘multi-purpose cultural events site’ in Birmingham’s trendy Digbeth district.

A video sent to the Birmingham Live website appeared to show Mr Fisher lying where he fell. A voice, believed to be that of the person recording, can be heard saying ‘my man is dead’.

West Midlands Police has urged anybody with information or footage from the scene to contact the force. Detective Chief Inspector Ian Ingram said: ‘It’s vital we hear from everybody who saw any part of what happened that night – no matter how insignificant they think it might be.’

In response to the killing, former Olympic champion boxer Audley Harrison yesterday tweeted an anti-gun and knife crime poem. Harrison wrote: ‘Put down the gun, put down the knife. Stop with killings, stop with the strife’.

The message ended with the hashtag #codyfisher and a prayer emoji. Mr Fisher signed for Stratford Town in the 2018-19 season and helped the club win the Southern League Challenge Cup for the first time.

He then moved to Stourbridge FC and had a stint at Bromsgrove Sporting before returning to the Warwickshire club this summer.

Mr Fisher had not yet made an appearance on the pitch this season due to injury.

Stratford Town chairman Jed McCrory said the news of Mr Fisher’s death had left everyone at the club ‘feeling numb’.
