Romanian kicked out 6 times is jailed after return to UK

- By Chris Brooke

A ROMANIAN criminal who returned to Britain despite being deported six times in four years has been sent to prison.

Nicu Marin, 44, ignored the deportation orders and re-entered the country through a variety of ports, Leeds Crown Court heard.

His latest tactic was to apply to marry a woman in the UK in a suspected sham marriage. Marin admitted breaching a deportation order and was jailed for 27 months on Tuesday under tougher immigration laws introduced last summer. He is expected to be deported for a seventh time after he has served half his prison sentence.

Marin, a father-of-five, has more than 20 convictions, mainly for theft and fraud, and is wanted for questioning in France over a series of robberies. Passing sentence, Judge Simon Batiste told him: ‘Britain has no

need for criminals such as you coming into this country. Sadly we have our own homegrown criminals. As such, a deterrent sentence must be imposed, especially someone like you who has regularly and flagrantly breached a deportation order.’

Prosecutor Bashir Ahmed said Marin was first deported in october 2015 but was caught shoplifting in the UK the following year. He was deported again but returned within three weeks, then deported a further three times. In November 2019 he was given a suspended prison sentence and deported for a sixth time after being found living in the Chapeltown area of Leeds.

The threat of jail did not deter him and he returned to the UK again last August. In November Marin was arrested in Leeds after he gave notice of

‘No right to be here’

his intention to marry a woman and made a claim for EU settlement, Mr Ahmed said.

Andrew Petterson, mitigating, said Marin’s sole motivation was to provide for his five children, who live with his 75year-old mother in Romania, and he had ‘ obtained some form of employment’.

Judge Batiste responded: ‘That in itself could be a criminal offence as he had no right to be here.’

He told Marin: ‘ Your immigration history is appalling.’
