- ELTON JOHN AT 75 by Gillian G. Gaar (Motorbooks £60, 200 pp)

REG DWIGHT realised that with a name like his, he’d never be considered pop star material. When he left the band Bluesology, he asked saxophonist Elton Dean if he could take his name. Dean quite reasonably refused, so Reg decided to mix and match with another band member, Long John Baldry. And so Elton John was born.

This fantastically vibrant book maps out the star’s life in 75 key moments, from his scene-stealing Pinball Wizard in Tommy to his unforgettable performance of Candle In The Wind at Princess Diana’s funeral.
