I said I hoped she was happy... his emotional last words to the Queen

- By Ryan Hooper

THE prince recounted how he whispered an emotional goodbye to the Queen at Balmoral shortly after she died.

The Duke of Sussex said he hoped she was ‘happy’ and that she was reunited with her beloved husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, who died the previous year.

Writing in his memoirs, Spare, Harry said he learned of the monarch’s death via news reports as he flew to Scotland to see the ailing Queen, and was allowed a moment alone with her on his arrival at Balmoral.

He described telling her of his admiration for her unrelenting dedication to the role, particularly during the summer’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations and welcoming new Prime Minister Liz Truss two days before she died, aged 96.

Harry wrote: ‘I advanced with uncertainty and saw her. I stayed still, watching her carefully for a good while. I whispered that I hoped she was happy and that she was with Grandfather now. I said that I admired her for having carried out her duties until the end. The [Platinum] Jubilee, the welcoming of the new Prime Minister’.

The intimate moment, hours after the Queen died at her Scottish estate on September 8, is one of several anecdotes of otherwise intensely private communications with his late grandmother. Harry also revealed that King Charles refused to allow his wife Meghan to join him at Balmoral.

And he recalls how he believed the Queen privately thought his young children Archie and Lilibet were ‘naughty’ during a rare meeting around the jubilee celebrations.
