ANTIPODEAN TOUR
Miriam Margolyes: Australia Unmasked, 9pm, BBC2
FOR the final leg of her journey of exploration of the Australian ethos of the ‘fair go’, Miriam Margolyes (pictured) is in South Australia to learn just how society treats its most vulnerable members, whether it’s age, disability or both that has left them needing support. Miriam, who turned 81 in May last year, admits that she finds it hard to think of herself as old and vulnerable, even as she struggles with mobility. On her travels, she stays at a nudist club, tackles ageism, and meets a boy with a degenerative muscular condition, whose mother is his staunchest advocate — but what, she wonders, happens to people who don’t have others to fight for them? Do they have a chance to be fully equal in society, or will they fall through the cracks?
