UNITED STAY IN THE HUNT FOR WEGHORST

- By CHRIS WHEELER

MANCHESTER UNITED are still hopeful of signing Wout Weghorst despite Besiktas refusing to rip up his loan deal from Burnley.

united are in talks with Burnley over signing Weghorst until the end of the season, and the Dutch striker has made it clear that he wants to move to Old Trafford.

But Besiktas will only agree to end the 30-year- old’s loan spell for the right price, and yesterday dismissed suggestions it can be cut short for £2million as ‘fictitious’.

Weghorst has scored nine goals in 18 games for the Istanbul club, who have an option to buy him for £8.5m in the summer.

Meanwhile, united host charlton Athletic in the carabao cup quarter- finals at Old Trafford tonight with full back Diogo Dalot insisting that winning trophies must become an obsession for the club.

united’s last silverware came in 2017 when they won the League cup and Europa League under Jose Mourinho. But Dalot insists that united need something to show for their progress under manager Erik ten Hag and, in that sense, the carabao cup can be just as important as the champions League.

‘I think it has to be an obsession for us to win trophies, to win things,’ said the Portugal defender, who confirmed that he is in talks over a new long-term contract.

‘ This club is about winning trophies. It is about competing and fighting in every trophy that we are in. The carabao cup is not smaller than a champions League, than a Europa League.

‘Obviously it is different dimensions, but for us, it is a trophy and we want to win it.’
