Bonkers! Squiggly line creates a ‘lane for drunk drivers’
THIS wiggly white line has left driv- ers wondering whether it is they who are drunk – or the planners.
It is on a stretch of road where the layout has already baffled locals. The squiggle runs from the end of a parking zone that has been placed between a one-way carriageway and a cycle lane.
It has led residents in Clevedon, Somerset, to describe the street markings as ‘bonkers’ and like a ‘driving lane for drink drivers’.
One said: ‘The road layout is a hot mess, the cycle lane is next to the pavement, then there is parking, then on the other side of the road is normal one-way traffic.’ North Somerset Council put in the lines as part of plans to introduce a cycle path linking the seafronts of Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare.
It said the squiggle is designed to encourage drivers to slow down: ‘The lines are a design feature to... help make the road feel narrower. A wavy line provides uncertainty to the driver and is proven to help reduce unwanted parking.’
However, North Somerset MP Liam Fox has described the whole scheme as a ‘shambles’ and local activists have organised a petition against the seafront changes.
