Evans: I’ll restore England feelgood factor

- By ALEX BYWATER

NICK EVANS has vowed to bring a feelgood factor back to England during the Six Nations but stressed that Steve Borthwick’s side will not be playing the free-flowing rugby which he has brought to Harlequins. Evans was last week confirmed as Borthwick’s attack assistant for the Championship, which begins against Scotland next month.

The New Zealander’s adventurous approach helped Harlequins become Premiership champions in 2021, although he insists it will not be easily transferred to the Test arena. Evans said: ‘There is some fantastic talent in England at the moment. It’s a hugely exciting time to be an England fan. I want to add to that. ‘When the opportunity is there, I want the fans to be excited and be on the edge of their seats. We want an excitement and buzz around when England have the ball in hand. ‘I imagine there are a lot of people thinking there will be just a taking of the Harlequins structure into England and I don’t think that will work. In fact, I know it won’t work.’ Evans will combine his role as Harlequins attack coach with England and will only join Borthwick’s set-up on the eve of the Six Nations.

The pair, alongside new defence chief kevin Sinfield, will aim to revive a team which won just once in November under former boss Eddie Jones. ‘I’m very honoured and privileged to join a group of outstanding coaches,’ said Evans, who will return to Harlequins in March.

‘I’m looking forward to getting stuck in and hopefully having a successful Six Nations. ‘There is not enough time to change everything and I don’t think everything needs changing. I think the short timeframe is an important point. I’m going to meet up after the last European game. There is not a lot of time to put in structures. My focus is on bringing an energy and clarity to when we have ball in hand.’

The involvement of Evans is likely to be good news for Marcus Smith, who has been the kiwi’s protege at Harlequins and is set to return from an ankle injury against Racing 92 on Sunday.
