... and Brownies get a woke rebrand

-

BROWNIES have been around since 1915 – but in Canada, they are about to get a rebrand.

Girl Guides will now call them ‘Embers’, as the name Brownies is deemed ‘harmful’ to ethnic minorities. ‘Embers are full of potential and when they work together, they can ignite a powerful flame,’ the organisation said. The decision to axe the name Brownies was made after current and ex-members said it was ‘a barrier to belonging for racialised girls and women’.

Group leader Jill Zelmanovits said the move reflected the fact that ‘girls experienced racism and felt they weren’t welcome in Girl Guides’.

Since the move, families have been signing up for the first time because the name is ‘more inclusive for their daughters’, she added.
