BANK OF DAVE, NETFLIX
FANCY a heartwarming story to take the chill off a cold January? Netflix’s feelgood film charts the real-life David and Goliath tale of one man against the establishment, when bubbly Burnley businessman Dave Fishwick opened a bank to help his local community in 2011, with all profits going to charity. Fishwick grew up poor but made a fortune selling minibuses and vans. When he saw local people and businesses struggling to get loans from high-street banks after the 2008 financial crash, he decided to set up his own bank to help them survive. The problem was that the UK authorities had not granted a new banking licence for 150 years, and weren’t about to give one to an inexperienced small-town salesman. Bond actor Rory Kinnear (pictured) stars as Fishwick, while Downton’s Hugh Bonneville is the banking bigwig out to stop him. The cast also includes Plebs’ Joel Fry as Hugh, a London lawyer hired by Fishwick to fight his corner. Reluctant at first, Hugh is soon seduced by Burnley’s charms — and those of local doctor Alexandra (Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor).
