Burnley win and eye Gyokeres

CHAMPIONSHIP

BURNLEY opened up a five-point lead at the top of the table on Saturday with a 1- 0 win over COVENTRY, whose striker Viktor Gyokeres caught the eye of manager Vincent Kompany.

Jordan Beyer’s 82nd-minute header secured victory for Kompany’s side but Gyokeres, 24, led the line superbly for the visitors, with his team-mates missing three golden chances to put Coventry ahead.

Burnley have their eyes on the Swedish striker, who is also linked with Southampton, and Kompany was full of praise for the performance of Gyokeres at turf Moor.

‘he showed everything that he is,’ said the Belgian, whose team remain unbeaten at home and are 16 points clear of third place in the chase for automatic promotion.

‘We have a back line that’s usually really aggressive and able to recover the ball on the first moment of impact, but with him it takes two, three or four times.’

WATFORD manager Slaven Bilic is not giving up on snatching an automatic promotion spot as his side climbed to third with a 2- 0 win over BLACKPOOL.

however, Watford remain 11 points adrift of second- placed Sheffield United and the Croat believes they will have to make three more signings this month to stand a chance.

the hornets took the lead with 17- year- old tobi Ademeyo’s first senior goal before ismaila Sarr’s late penalty sealed it at Vicarage Road.

‘When we spoke during the World Cup break we said midfield, striker, winger,’ said Bilic. ‘it is not optional. With those additions i wouldn’t be afraid of playing any team.’

those arrivals would be in addition to the three players Watford have already signed this month, with ismael Kone, Matheus Martins and Joao Ferreira making their league debuts against Blackpool.

SHEFFIELD UNITED kept pace with Burnley at the top as iliman Ndiaye’s early strike and Jayden Bogle’s double helped them to a 3-1 home win over to STOKE. ‘i’m expecting 19 more tough games like that,’ said manager Paul heckingbottom.

CARDIFF could turn to their former manager Neil Warnock, 74, after sacking Mark hudson in the wake of their 1-1 draw at home to WIGAN, which left them fourth from bottom.

hudson was shown the door only four months into the job and just a week after being assured by the board that rumours of Warnock returning were wide of the mark.
