‘The Italian naval attache gave a reception to which both my father, Commander John Hamer, as British naval attache, and the Duke of Edinburgh, on a royal visit, were invited,’ reveals Eden Confidenti­al reader Sue Brown. ‘Presented in line were Anita Ekberg, Gina Lollobrigi­da and Sophia Loren. On seeing them, the Duke turned to my father and said: “Oh, look . . . the Continenta­l Shelf.” How my father kept a straight face, I do not know . . .’
