ONE of the longest-running dramas in the U.S., NCIS follows a naval criminal investigation unit who look into Navy-linked crimes. Over its two decades, the one constant on this consistently fun and exciting show has been the presence of Mark Harmon as Leroy Gibbs, the no-nonsense ex-marine who leads the team. That all changes in series 20, though, as Harmon leaves the show and is replaced by actor Gary Cole as new boss Alden Parker (pictured), an ex-FBI agent who quickly has to get up to speed with the group’s idiosyncratic methods. Parker’s got a lot of respect for his predecessor, but has his own way of doing things, too. A man of few words, he’s something of an enigma — and there’s a tragic incident in his past that he’s keeping secret, for now — so it’s going to be intriguing finding out more about him over the coming weeks. It’s the perfect opportunity for non-fans to jump into the show, while old hands can enjoy the refresh that Cole’s presence brings.
