I WAs in a souvenir shop at rievaulx Abbey near Helmsley, north Yorkshire, with my husband when a gentleman came in with a little girl aged about five.

He explained to her that the abbey was established in 1132 by 12 monks. she stood and pondered this for a while and then asked: ‘And did they have a gift shop?’
