Public sector indulgence

-

AnOTHer public body votes to go on strike because their pay rise doesn’t equate to inflation.

Like nurses and doctors, teachers do a valuable job and are much appreciated by the rest of the country. But what they fail to appreciate is that most of us don’t work in the public sector.

I know of no one in the private sector who’s had an inflation-busting pay rise. The average is 5 per cent.

The state pension triple lock has been restored this year, but that is still a relatively small increase.

Many public sector retirees have final salary pensions. Few in the private sector are lucky enough to have this benefit.

In an ideal world, there would be low inflation and sufficient money to meet pay demands. Unfortunately, we have rampant inflation and the country is basically bust.

should the public sector get their demands, it will be funded by the private sector and pensioners, despite getting much smaller pay awards themselves.

doesn’t the public sector care about the repercussions for the rest of the country?
