LAbouR leader Hugh Gaitskell died suddenly, peacefully at 9.12 last night, with his wife’s hand in his. Mr Gaitskell’s death, aged 56, is a tremendous blow to british politics. For the Labour Party, with a general election looming, it is catastrophic.

bILL CLInTon faced a further damaging sex scandal yesterday after a former White House employee gave sworn testimony that he propositioned her in the oval office. Kathleen Willey told investigators the President fondled her before asking for sex. Details emerged after Mr Clinton’s humiliating meeting with Paula Jones in a sex harassment case. Mrs Willey’s evidence could prove crucial to the outcome.

nInA bAWDEn (1925-2012). The Essexborn booker-shortlisted novelist was best known for the children’s book Carrie’s War, about two evacuees in World War II. She was seriously injured in the 2002 Potters bar rail crash and her husband was one of the seven fatalities.
