A load of old rubbish? Now council tells families to de-ice their bins

- By Claire Duffin

FAMILIES have followed a myriad of rules for years about bin collections.

And just when they may have thought they had seen it all, a council has come up with a new twist – warning that bins would not be emptied if they were frozen shut.

Blaby District Council in Leicestershire issued the advice following days of freezing temperatures. The authority recommended residents check their bin lids on the morning of collection.

In the post on Facebook, the council added: ‘Our crews will do their best to empty your bin, but if they are unable to do so because it is frozen shut they will not return to empty it until the next scheduled collection day.’

It gave residents ‘useful tips’ on how to prevent bin lids freezing shut, including keeping the bin in a shed or garage.

Residents responded by posting their own irreverent ideas, with one adding: ‘Shall I put a hat and scarf on it?’ A council spokesman said: ‘Our intention was to offer practical advice and suggest ways to overcome issues of frozen waste.’
