Success still running in the Korda family

- By DAVID KENT

SEBASTIAN KORDA stunned Daniil Medvedev to make an Australian Open statement, 25 years after his father Petr claimed the title. The country has been a happy hunting ground for the Kordas, with Sebastian winning the junior title five years ago, while sisters Nelly and Jessica have both won the Australian Open golf. While it may be too soon to talk about the 22-year-old adding more silverware, he was superb in a 7-6, 6-3, 7-6 third round win over No 7 seed Medvedev. ‘I’m definitely the worst athlete in the family so far,’ joked Korda. ‘My dad always loved coming here. Both my sisters, they love coming here. It’s a special place for us. Hopefully I can go one better than the juniors and do it in the pros.’ Medvedev has struggled since losing to Rafael Nadal in the final last year and was outplayed. ‘I think it was a top match where he was just better than me,’ the Russian said.

Earlier Stefanos Tsitsipas, at three the highest seed left, beat Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 6-2, 7-6, 6-3. Mackenzie McDonald was unable to follow up his win over Nadal, resorting to underarm serves in a 7-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to No 31 seed Yoshihito Nishioka.
