Sturgeon U-turn on alcohol for 16-year-olds

- By Policy Editor

NICOLA Sturgeon has backtracked after suggesting she thought 16-year-olds should be allowed to drink in pubs, as she discussed teens being able to change their legal sex.

During an interview with the BBC, the Scottish First Minister was asked why she believed 16-year-olds were mature enough to self-identify as a different sex under her controversial Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill. Ms Sturgeon pointed out they can already get married and join the Army, then suggested they should also be allowed to drink alcohol under ‘a single age of consent’.

But after the broadcast, Ms Sturgeon tweeted: ‘This was bad phrasing on my part.’ She insisted she had not been calling for a review of licensing laws, adding: ‘I meant that there are reasons why you can do some things at 16 and not others.’
