THE BOAT SMUGGLERS, 8PM, RADIO 4

-

BOATS manufactured in Turkey, specifically designed for the hazardous journey across the choppy and crowded waters of the English Channel, end up on the beaches of France. They are ordered by peoplesmugglers who will load desperate migrants on to the boats, which then head for the English coast. The journalist Sue Mitchell and former British soldier and aid worker Rob Lawrie take a lot of risks as they follow a supply chain that threatens to thwart any deals between Britain and France to intercept the Channel crossings themselves.

n THE Spanish violinist Maria Duenas (pictured) is hardly out of her teens, yet has stacked up a pile of prizes for her playing. She has had solo engagements in prestigious venues around the world and is among the current stars of Radio 3’s NEW GENERATION ARTISTS (4.30PM, RADIO 3), here joining her fellow prodigies in a round-up of their recordings. Maria plays Chausson’s Poeme, an account of unrequited love.
