Seven dead in new California gun bloodbath

- By Harriet Alexander

THE US was left reeling yesterday after seven people were shot and killed in California’s third massacre in just eight days.

The killings took place at two farms near San Francisco. Four victims were found at a mushroom farm.

The other three were later found two miles away. After the slaughter the suspected gunman, 67-year-old farm worker Chunli Zhao, bizarrely drove to a police station and parked.

Officers swooped when he was spotted in his maroon Lexus SUV and he was arrested. Zhao was, allegedly, in possession of a semiautomatic pistol. It was reported that he had worked for decades at one of the farms where the shootings took place and that the victims were former co-workers.

He was ‘fully cooperating’ with law enforcement, officials said, and is believed to have acted alone. Dramatic footage shows the moment he was taken into custody on Monday afternoon in

‘A tragedy we hear about too often’

Half Moon Bay, 30 miles from San Francisco.

Armed officers approached Zhao as he got out of his car, before quickly tackling him to the ground and putting him in handcuffs. Several police cars arrived before he was taken inside the station.

The slaughter comes just two days after Huu Can Tran, 72, shot and killed 11 people celebrating Chinese New Year in a ballroom dance studio in Monterey Park, near Los Angeles.

Tran turned the gun on himself shortly after.

A week earlier on January 16, six people – including a 16-year- old mother and her ten-month- old baby – were shot and killed by two gunmen in central California.

Sheriff Christina Corpus, of San Mateo County, said: ‘This kind of shooting is horrific.

‘It’s a tragedy we hear about too often, but today it has hit home to Half Moon Bay.’

Governor of California Gavin Newsom tweeted: ‘At the hospital meeting victims of a mass shooting when I get pulled away to be briefed about another shooting. Tragedy upon tragedy.’
