William’s right up my Street

Corrie legend Gail Platt’s verdict on ‘gorgeous’ Prince as he makes her MBE

YOU could argue that her onscreen alter ego deserves a medal – after surviving a murderous ex-husband and 30 years of parenting a troubled son.

But it was Helen Worth – better known as Gail Platt in Coronation Street for 48 years – who was yesterday made an MBE for her services to drama.

The actress, 74, received the honour from a ‘gorgeous’ Prince William at Windsor Castle in a ceremony that also saw England’s chief nurse Ruth May made an MBE. Ms Worth, pictured, who first joined the ITV soap in 1974, said: ‘[William] was so lovely, so easy. He asked all the right questions. He was very complimentary.

‘It just feels absolutely wonderful. To collect an MBE is very special.’ She said she planned to celebrate the day with her husband Trevor Dawson and friends in Windsor. Gail has had five husbands on the show, with one of them, Richard Hillman, trying to drown her. Meanwhile Gail’s son David has been at the centre of drugs, abortion and murder plotlines since he was introduced as a newborn during the Christmas Day 1990 episode.
