POWER SHIFT By Olivia Jones
1st nuclear reactor in 30 years rolls into UK
IT was a case of slowly does it as Britain’s first new nuclear reactor in 30 years snaked its way through rural Somerset on the final leg of its journey to Hinkley Point C power plant.
The 500-ton reactor – the first of two to be delivered – is due to start generating electricity in 2026. Made in France, it arrived at Avonmouth Docks, Bristol, before a barge trip to Combwich Wharf and a final drive to the power plant.
Hinkley Point C owner EDF Energy said its arrival marks a ‘significant milestone’ for the controversial £20billion plant, under construction since 2016 and partfunded by China.
