LeTTUCeS, tomatoes, peppers and other salad ingredient­s are expensive out of season. Supermarke­ts are rationing them because of shortages caused by bad weather abroad, but we should ask why people want to buy this produce.

Apples can be stored over winter, while gluts of summer soft fruits can be made into jams or frozen.
